AWS Academy at KGEC: Learn the Cloud on the Real Thing

Written by Biswajit Pain (Alumni, KGEC)
The cloud is where software lives now
The video you streamed last night, the UPI payment you made this morning, the AI chatbot you tried last week: most of it runs on cloud platforms. Companies of every size are moving to the cloud, and they need engineers who understand it.
KGEC is now a member of AWS Academy, Amazon Web Services' programme for colleges. It gives KGEC students free, ready-to-learn cloud courses built by AWS, along with real lab environments. Speaking as an alumnus, this is one of the most practical opportunities on campus right now.
What AWS Academy gives you
Courses for every interest. Start with Cloud Foundations, then go deeper with Cloud Architecting, Cloud Developing or Cloud Operations. If you lean towards AI or data, there are Machine Learning Foundations, Generative AI Foundations, Machine Learning for NLP and Data Engineering. Cloud Security Foundations covers the security side.
Hands-on labs on real AWS. Each course includes guided labs that open a live AWS environment from inside the course. You launch servers, set up storage and configure networks for real, with no credit card and nothing to install.
The Learner Lab. A longer-running sandbox with access to over 100 AWS services, where you can work on assignments and your own projects over the semester.
Free extra learning. As an AWS Academy student you get 12 months of free access to AWS Skill Builder, plus entry to the Emerging Talent Community once you complete a course.
A certification path. The courses are built to prepare you for exams such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate.
Learning with your teachers
Cloud can feel overwhelming at first, with dozens of services and unfamiliar terms. That is where your KGEC teachers come in. They invite you into the AWS Academy course, connect it to subjects like Cloud Computing, AI/ML or Data Science, and take you through your first labs so the console stops feeling like a maze.
In the Learner Lab, your teacher can set you real tasks, such as hosting a website or building a small data pipeline, and look at what you built to give feedback. They can also see your progress through modules and knowledge checks, so help comes early if you get stuck. When you finish a course, they can guide your preparation for the certification exam.
Smart habits for the labs
- End your lab session when you finish, and stop or delete resources you no longer need, so your lab credit lasts the whole course.
- Save your code and notes outside the lab, for example on GitHub, because lab work is removed after the class end date.
- Try one thing beyond the instructions in every lab; that is where you learn the most.
Getting started
Ask your Cloud Computing or AI/ML teacher which AWS Academy course is running this semester, and keep an eye on your official KGEC email for the invitation. For access questions, Dr. Kousik Dasgupta is KGEC's point of contact for AWS Academy.
Cloud skills are no longer a bonus on a CV; they are becoming a basic expectation. You now have the courses, the labs and your teachers on your side. Make the most of it.
